Nation's Leading Eating Disorders Treatment Center Offers Summer Program for Overweight Children in the Phoenix Area

PHOENIX, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the American Heart Association, more than 30 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are overweight and 15.3 percent are obese. Childhood obesity has become such a threat to public health that it could reverse the last century's gains in reducing cardiovascular disease and death.
On June 6, Remuda Ranch, the nation's leading treatment center for eating disorders will begin offering a two-week "Healthy Image Day Program" (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for overweight children ages 10 to 14 at its Chandler, Ariz. facility, Remuda Life.
"The program is designed to offer positive growth and change for young people struggling with weight issues and negative body image," said Marian Eberly, vice president of patient care services at Remuda Ranch. "This therapeutic summer day program will teach children healthy nutrition, exercise and positive life skills."

Each child will be assessed by Remuda's professional staff including a registered dietitian and Master's-level therapist, and will spend two weeks learning about healthy nutrition, exercise and positive life skills. Additionally, activities such as rock climbing, swimming and gym-related experiences will be offered.
Group sessions, led by a team of eating disorder specialists, will be held to address issues such as positive peer relationships and self esteem. Family involvement will be important and a weekly support group for parents will be included.
