Jane Brody to Keynote ASPE National Pain Educators Forum for Healthcare Professionals

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 May 2006, 09:01 CDT

MONTCLAIR, N.J., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer health expert, nationally syndicated New York Times Personal Health columnist and best-selling author Jane Brody will keynote the American Society of Pain Educators (ASPE) Second Annual Pain Educators Forum, to be held on July 20-23, 2006, at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The four-day educational conference is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to develop expertise in pain management, become an in-house resource for their peers, and more effectively manage diagnosis and treatment of their patients.

The conference format will be problem-based learning (PBL), which will present clinical case studies that promote acquisition of knowledge, problem- solving aptitude and team communication skills.

Jointly sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy, ASPE and the Journal of Family Practice, the Pain Educators Forum is uniquely designed to teach healthcare practitioners across a range of disciplines best practices in pain management and effective techniques for transferring this knowledge to clinical peers and patients. The Forum is intended for primary care physicians and specialists in such areas as neurology, oncology, orthopedics, anesthesia, psychiatry, rheumatology, hospital medicine and osteopathy; palliative care specialists; physician assistants; nurse practitioners; pharmacists; physical and occupational therapists and allied health professionals.

B. Eliot Cole, M.D., M.P.A., Executive Director of the ASPE, issued an invitation to healthcare professionals whose patients have pain-related conditions: "Interest in pain management has grown exponentially. Those who attend the Pain Educators Forum will join a growing cadre of enthusiastic and dedicated professionals committed to the creation of a new professional discipline. Our aim is nothing less than to improve the standards of clinical pain practice across all disciplines and ultimately promote health and quality of life for people who suffer pain."

The expansive four-day schedule includes plenary and breakout sessions in such topics as pharmacotherapy, polypharmacy, rare pain disorders, pain management in special populations (addiction, geriatrics, pediatrics, cancer and palliative care), preparation for JCAHO site inspections, differentiating common pain disorders, selecting best treatment options, impact of OIG, DEA and FDA regulation on clinical practice, optimizing adjuvant therapies and integrating complementary interventions.

In addition to the educational program, networking opportunities have been expanded to include receptions, exhibits and a Pain Educators Forum Dining Club for those who want to meet their peers informally over dinner at Philadelphia-area restaurants.

Attendees will earn approximately 32 Continuing Education (CE/CME) Hours in Pain Management. Credits may be used toward becoming a Credentialed Pain Educator(TM) (CPE), which is analogous to a Certified Diabetes Educator in clinical and institutional practice. For those who have completed Level One (by attending the 2005 Forum or completing the courses online at http://www.paineducators.org/ ), this year's Forum also offers Level Two courses. To become a CPE, a pain educator-in-training is asked to master a core curriculum of approximately 108 credit hours of content study through participation in the Pain Educators Forum, home study based on materials provided by the ASPE and successful completion of a credentialing examination to be administered by the American Board of Pain Educators.

The Forum also satisfies the 12-hour CME requirement for California license holders for Pain and End-of-Life Care by the end of 2006, as specified in California AB No. 487. It is also especially designed for hospitals with, or seeking, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) certification, which requires pain management resources in place.

More information about the Pain Educators Forum, including registration forms, are available at the ASPE Web site, http://www.paineducators.org/, or through ASPE at 877-733-9797. Companies and organizations that want to exhibit at the meeting, sponsor a satellite symposium or submit a poster presentation should contact Stephen Porada at 973-679-4487 or sp@paineducators.org.
