SAVANNAH, Ga., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC) in Savannah, Georgia, has been selected as the third anterior hip replacement procedure training site in the United States.
Memorial Health, along with Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, and Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, will provide training to physicians in a hip replacement procedure offering numerous advantages to the patient.
Unlike the traditional back or side approach to hip replacement that requires restricted motion and a relatively long recuperation, the anterior approach has patients lying on their backs on a special ProFX(TM) surgical table. The ProFX(TM) table has unique capabilities to position the patient's leg and is appropriate for nearly every primary total hip replacement patient. Patients are allowed to bend the hip freely without limitation, and are walking several hours following surgery.
Rehabilitation is accelerated and hospital time decreased because the hip is replaced without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femurs. Other surgical approaches necessitate detachment of muscle from the femur during the surgery. Major advantages include no motion or weight bearing restrictions, decreased hospital time (usual stay is two to four days), no lateral-side hip pain, fast return to function and normal gait, and significantly less pain from surgery.
Surgeon trainer for the program will be Edward Whelan, M.D., who has performed almost 40 procedures to date and was selected due to his qualifications and experience. Currently, more than 168,000 people undergo total hip replacements in the United States each year.
