Health Systems Solutions Subsidiary Offers New Web-Based Drug Interaction Alert Service to Help Home Health Companies Manage Medication Risk
Posted on: Thursday, 1 June 2006, 09:01 CDT
Healthcare Quality Solutions, Inc. a wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Systems Solutions, Inc. (OTCBB:HSSO) today announced the introduction of Medication Risk Manager(TM). Home health agencies can access the service to assist in the management of patient's use of drugs and to identify potential adverse conditions where drug-to-drug; drug-to-food and drug-to-herb negative interactions may occur.
Home health agencies that opt for the service can use the web to produce medication teaching sheets to be left with the patient and can receive immediate notification that there is a risk of patient injury due to drug interaction.
Adverse Drug Events are an increasing concern.
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, over 770,000 people are injured or die each year in hospitals from Adverse Drug Events. The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education reports that the 12.7% of the population over age 65 years consume an estimated 30% to 40% of all prescription medications, and on average use twice as many nonprescription medications, as prescription medications.
"With the average 85 year old home patient having 5 to 7 prescribing physicians and taking 10 to 15 prescription drugs along with many nonprescription medications, it is often impossible for the prescribing physicians or the dispensing pharmacist to know for certain which drugs are being consumed. It is the home health nurse that identifies, often for the first time, the various drugs being consumed and therefore the optimum opportunity to identify potential interactions," said Claudia Conti, RN, MSN, Vice President of Personal Touch, Bayside, NY and a home health agency participating in the beta test of the service. Conti continued, "We look forward to using the Medication Risk Manager to ensure our patients are not at risk of Adverse Drug Events and to assist prescribing physicians minimize risk associated with such events."
"HQS is pleased to provide a service that assists our home health customers improve the quality of care and avoiding unnecessary complications for their patients," said Mike Milvain, CEO of Health Systems Solutions.
