SAN DIEGO, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Outside a Children's Hospital fundraiser, themed "A treasure chest of miracles," hospital employees, their children, community and religious leaders will call on the hospital to offer affordable healthcare for hospital workers and their families and will urge donors attending the gala to use their influence to ensure that the hospital treats workers with dignity and respect. Protesters will don pirate costumes in the spirit of the gala's theme.
"We are hardworking caregivers, yet many of us are forced to rely on public assistance for healthcare for ourselves and our children," said Cindy Lewis, 26-year employee. "Children's Hospital should show the same compassion toward our children as they do for our patients."
Children's Hospital workers have been negotiating a contract with the hospital for two years in hopes of enhancing the quality of patient care by allowing the hospital to recruit and retain a stable and qualified workforce. Employees have proposed the creation of a patient care committee, where workers could help implement safer staffing levels and bring any suggestions to improve patient care directly to top administration. Workers have also proposed higher minimum wages and access to affordable healthcare to stem the high turnover rate.
