Posted on: Tuesday, 6 June 2006, 15:00 CDT
Reginald Bolick, MD, John Sonfield, MD, and Amy Murrell, MD, three surgeons with Pee Dee Surgical Group, will be the lead physicians involved in the second surgical live Webcast held at McLeod Health on OR-Live.com.
Drs. Bolick and Sonfield will perform a minimally invasive procedure for acid reflux disease (GERD) on Wednesday, June 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET. Dr. Murrell will serve as the moderator, providing education and information about this innovative and specialized surgical procedure to both physician and consumer audiences. Deepak Chowdhary MD, a gastroenterologist, will offer insight into Barrett's Syndrome, a risk factor for esophageal cancer.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus.
GERD is a chronic condition affects millions of Americans and is the most common Upper Gastrointestinal disorder in Western society.
* 44% of Americans experience monthly heartburn * 10% have daily symptoms * 18% use non-prescription medications * $5 billion are spent per year on pharmaceuticals
Additionally, if there is injury to the lining of the esophagus (esophagitis) from this reflux, it can potentially lead to more serious health problems, like esophageal cancer.
Once treatment for GERD has begun, such as with medication therapy, it will usually need to be continued indefinitely. Weaknesses in treating GERD patients with medication therapy include: recurrence after cessation of therapy, effects of continued reflux, side effects of medication and costs of medications. Therefore, this minimally invasive procedure for acid reflux disease is an answer for some patients to stop the cycle of ongoing treatment.
With a minimally invasive surgery like Lap Nissen, the recovery time for patients is decreased. Patients return to work and quality of life faster. Fewer hospital days from surgery translate directly to lower out-of-pocket costs for patients as well as elimination of prescription drug costs associated with ongoing medication therapy.
