North American Scientific Hosts Radiation Oncology & IMRT Technology Symposium in China; Experts From the United States and China Presented on NOMOS Products

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 June 2006, 09:01 CDT

North American Scientific, Inc. (Nasdaq:NASI), a leading manufacturer of radiation therapy products, held a symposium titled "Radiation Oncology and IMRT Technology" in Guangzhou City, China from June 2 - June 4, which featured presentations by six radiation oncology experts from the United States and China. Presenters discussed the applications of North American Scientific's NOMOS(R) products in clinical settings, specifically PEACOCK(R), an integrated IMRT planning and delivery system, CORVUS(R) treatment planning software, and BAT(R), which uses ultrasound images to confirm the location of organs and tumor sites within the patient's body.

Approximately 50 oncologists, physicists and distributors from mainland China and Hong Kong attended the symposium. Participants viewed demonstrations of the PEACOCK(R) system at Sun Yat Sen Hospital, a prestigious oncology hospital in Southern China, and learned about how the hospital uses PEACOCK(R) in its radiation oncology program. Participants also attended demonstrations of the CORVUS(R) and BAT(R) systems and learned how to operate them.

"The attendees were very impressed with NOMOS(R) products," said L. Michael Cutrer, President & Chief Executive Officer of North American Scientific. "After hearing testimony about the advantages of the NOMOS(R) system and how the system could be added to a facility's current equipment for a relatively lower cost, at a number of sites expressed interest in purchasing NOMOS(R) products. Since many facilities in China have linear accelerators in place, a NOMOS(R) upgrade makes sense fiscally, while at the same time providing high quality care."

"We are extremely pleased with the success of the China symposium and the feedback we have received," continued Mr. Cutrer. "NOMOS(R) offers a high-quality IMRT system that can be added to a facility's existing linear accelerator without the need to purchase a costly IMRT-enabled linear accelerator, which allows facilities to upgrade to the latest technology in an affordable manner. We look forward to continuing our relationships with these doctors and further expanding our business in China."
