Stores Pull Diabetic Food Off Shelves

British Co-op food stores and pharmacies are planning to stop selling special diabetic food and drinks at the urging of a diabetes group.
Diabetes UK says the items -- such as chocolate, marmalade, jam and fruit drinks -- are expensive and high in fat.
The chain says it is pulling the products from its shelves because diabetics should follow the same healthy eating advice as everyone else, Sky News reported.
Diabetic foods are also high in fat and are therefore inadvisable in large quantities for people, with or without diabetes, Diabetes UK spokesman Zoe Harrison said. They also contain sweeteners which affect blood glucose levels in much the same way as sugar, and therefore offer no nutritional benefit.
Sky News said Boots pulled its diabetic food range a few years ago on the advice of Diabetes UK but reinstated some of the products following a large number of customer complaints.
