Consumers Seek Natural Alternatives for Joint Pain, Inflammation As Side Effects of NSAIDs Mount

BOULDER, Colo., June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- With new research showing popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, consumers young and old are seeking natural ways to treat and prevent joint pain and inflammation.
The June 3 study in the British Medical Journal is the latest in a number of studies linking NSAIDs to serious health risks. Researchers found that high doses of pain medications including ibuprofen were associated with a 51% increase in risk of heart attack and stroke. This study comes after a February 2006 report in Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine finding NSAIDs delay healing of ligaments and tendons after injury, leaving users at increased risk for future injuries.
These side effects create a catch-22 for many people who rely on NSAIDs for regular pain relief for conditions like arthritis, or for post-exercise joint pain and inflammation.
"This latest study linking NSAIDs to an increase in heart attack risk underscores the need for natural, non-drug options for pain and inflammation," says John F. Johnson, co-founder and Product Development Director for RejuveNature, a Boulder-based nutritional supplements company. "These drugs have an unacceptable level of side effects, and consumers are starting to realize that natural alternatives do exist that may complement NSAIDs, and in some cases replace them."
In response, RejuveNature launched InflaMend (http://www.inflamend.com/), a natural anti-inflammatory formula containing clinically proven extracts that act on inflammatory enzymes in the body, including COX-2. Unlike the ingredients in NSAIDs and drugs like Vioxx, the botanical-based ingredients in InflaMend don't completely block these enzymes, but reduce inflammation while allowing normal healing to occur.
As a result, InflaMend is able to provide many of the same benefits for pain and inflammation, but without the side effects common to aspirin and other NSAIDs. Also, studies show the ingredients in InflaMend can be safely taken in conjunction with NSAIDs, and can effectively lessen their side effects.
"The ingredients in InflaMend not only reduce pain and inflammation, but can lessen the stomach upset caused by other anti-inflammatory drugs," says Johnson. "There is clinical evidence that these ingredients can improve the efficacy of traditional NSAID therapy which may reduce the required dosage, and therefore the risk, for patients who must remain on these drugs."
