CLEVELAND, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthy Learners, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System (CSA Health System), has received the 2006 Achievement Citation, the Catholic Health Association of the United States' (CHA) highest program award for Catholic health care.
The award was presented during the 91st Annual Catholic Health Assembly June 4-8 in Orlando, Florida. Since 1975, the Achievement Citation has honored bold and innovative initiatives from Catholic health care providers in service to their communities. With over 1,100 in attendance, the Catholic Health Assembly is the largest gathering of leaders of U.S. Catholic health care organizations.
Healthy Learners was honored for its commitment to helping children in South Carolina by improving their "whole health." The program currently serves uninsured and underinsured school age children in 102 schools in seven school districts across South Carolina by providing access to needed health care. Healthy Learners strives to improve the academic achievements of each child in the program by removing health barriers to learning, therefore decreasing absenteeism and allowing students to focus on their education.
"We are honored and humbled to be recognized by the Catholic Health Association," said CSA Health System President and CEO Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA. "The Achievement Citation Award proves how, when working together to further our mission, we can and do nurture the growth of healthy communities and make for better places to live," Sr. Judith said.
During annual screenings, school nurses refer children requiring follow-up care to Healthy Learners' network of health professionals who provide needed services free of charge or at a reduced rate. No costs are incurred by the child, parent or school. Participating children also receive prescription medications at no charge to them as well as assistance with transportation to medical appointments. Since its inception in 1992, more than 30,000 children have received health services through the Healthy Learners program.
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, CSA Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA) in Ohio and South Carolina.
In 1999, CSA Health System formed two Ohio not-for-profit corporations with University Hospitals Health System to equally own and operate St. John West Shore Hospital, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Cuyahoga Physician Network, West Shore Primary Care and Professional Medical Equipment. Through this equal ownership, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine continue their legacy of high quality, compassionate care that began at the time of the founding of these organizations.
CSA Health System is the sole sponsor of Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, which includes Providence Hospital/Providence Heart Institute and Providence Hospital Northeast in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to the Sisters of Charity Foundations of Canton, Cleveland and South Carolina, CSA Health System oversees several other health and human services and education- related organizations including Cleveland's Joseph's Home, a unique residential care center for homeless men and Canton's Early Childhood Resource Center which promotes quality child care. CSA Health System also provides residential eldercare services at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio and through joint sponsorship with the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati for Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford, Ohio.
