Bleeding Gums Linked to Many Diseases

Bleeding gums may indicate more than an oral health problem; U.S. studies have linked gum disease to heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and diabetes.
Women with gum problems have more trouble because studies show that pregnant women with bleeding gums -- a common occurrence due to hormonal changes during pregnancy -- are seven times more likely to give birth prematurely, as well as deliver low-birth-weight babies.
The link between gum disease and potential health problems is highlighted by the fact that 95 percent of adults have some form of gum problems -- from gingivitis, or red, puffy gums, all the way to severe periodontal disease involving loss of teeth. In fact, more teeth are lost to gum disease than to tooth decay, according to Dr. Harold Katz, a California dentist, who has created a complete oral care system that is designed to target gum problems at home.
Oxygenating compounds as well as natural antimicrobials are designed to attack anaerobic bacteria and the sulfur compounds at the root of unhealthy gums, says Katz. Other compounds, such as aloe vera and Co-enzyme Q-10 focus on puffy and swollen gum tissue.
