Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare to Hold Town Meetings About Durable Medical Equipment

Posted on: Friday, 7 July 2006, 12:00 CDT

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Public Welfare will host a series of town meetings this month to discuss selective contracting for durable medical equipment and supplies under the Medical Assistance Program fee-for-service delivery system. The first meeting will be held in Harrisburg on July 17.

The town meetings will offer consumers and providers an opportunity to discuss access to durable medical equipment and medical supply services, as well as quality of care issues.

The Medical Assistance Program in Pennsylvania currently serves over 878,000 people through the fee-for-service delivery system, including 288,000 who are enrolled in the department's enhanced primary care case management and disease management program, ACCESS Plus.

The competitive bidding process for selective contracting enables the department to increase accountability through contract management and monitoring of contract performance standards. It also reduces costs by relying on competitive market forces to bid and negotiate fees for durable medical equipment and medical supplies.

The meetings are scheduled for the following dates and times: * July 17 -- Main Capitol, East Wing, Room 8E A&B, Harrisburg; 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. * July 19 -- Heinz Conference Room, Human Services Building, One Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh; 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. * July 19 -- Holiday Inn, 100 Pine Street, Williamsport; 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. * July 20 -- United Way of Southeastern PA, Seven Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The meetings are open to the general public. Because of time limitations, oral testimony will be limited to five minutes.

The Department of Public Welfare helps people meet their basic needs by providing health care and other critical support services for children, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, persons with disabilities and low income families and adults in Pennsylvania.
