New York to Stockpile Avian Flu Treatment

The state of New York will spend $23 million to stockpile avian flu treatment in the next few years.
The state health department has plans to buy more than one million doses of Tamiflu, and 227,000 doses of Relenza, the Houston Chronicle reported late last week.
The Bush administration already has plans to buy enough medicine for 44 million people, but states have the option of keeping more on hand.
The H5N1 strain of avian flu affects primarily birds, but 229 humans have thus far contracted the disease.
However, experts warn that such antiviral treatments are only part of an overall strategy for dealing with a pandemic. More investment in health system capacity is also needed, the newspaper said.
