Physicians Embrace ChartOne Software; Impact of Electronic Document Management System Felt Beyond Health Information Management Departments

Posted on: Monday, 10 July 2006, 09:01 CDT

ChartOne, Inc., the leading provider of on demand medical record solutions, is seeing its electronic document management systems reach beyond the HIM department within its customers' facilities. Using ChartOne's electronic document management technology, physicians have been able to save valuable time through increased efficiencies. Today, thousands of physicians are using ChartOne's eWebHealth Suite to access and view medical records anywhere they have Internet access.

Physicians at Providence Medical Center in Kansas are experiencing these benefits every day. Physician response has been positive because the software is simple to learn and use and "looks like a patient chart.""This weekend at home, I received a call from the hospital about a patient, and it was very helpful to have access to his medical record information online. I could discuss the patient care history with another physician to help that physician quickly make an informed patient care decision," stated Dr. Ravi Bhagat, a cardiologist board-certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine at Providence Medical Center.

At the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in Philadelphia, if a patient happens to revisit the hospital through the emergency department, physicians can instantaneously call up that patient's historical chart and organize it in ways that enable them to quickly ascertain the most relevant details. For example, they can have a single view of all the patient's lab values over time or his or her medication history, making it easier to spot relevant trends.

Peter Quinn, DMD, MD, the hospital's chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery, was surprised at how easy the system was to use and how quickly its impact was felt by the clinical staff. "Although we understand and appreciate the administrative impacts of having electronic access to medical records, of course our greatest concern is always providing the highest quality of patient care," he explained. "We now have quick, complete access to critical historical medical information that positively informs the decisions we make every day -- and we didn't have to suffer through an arduous technology implementation process or significantly change our workflow to get these benefits."

ChartOne chief executive officer Brian Cahill sees these expanded uses of hosted electronic document management technology as evidence of a growing trend. "Hospitals are choosing to implement hosted electronic document management systems because they deliver immediate benefits while smoothly integrating with and complementing their overall electronic health record strategies," Cahill said. "Our customers typically are up and running in six months or less and deriving the benefits of increased productivity across the organization. We are also particularly pleased to be a part of improving physicians' overall work environment with technology that they are embracing."
