Johns Hopkins: Best U.S. Hospital

Posted on: Tuesday, 11 July 2006, 12:00 CDT

U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Hospitals list for 2006 ranks Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as the best overall U.S. hospital.

Avery Comarow, senior writer for the magazine, told CBS News the hospitals are ranked overall and in 16 specialties, from cancer and heart disease to pediatrics and urology. Of 5,189 hospitals evaluated, only 176 scored high enough to be ranked in any specialty.

Of Johns Hopkins, Comarow said: They've cemented themselves to that No. 1 position. And the reason they're there is they do a lot of different things extremely well.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was second on the magazine's Honor Roll list, with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio third.

They (Mayo) are legendary and deservedly so, Comarow noted. "They also do a lot of things very well. Not quite as many as Hopkins, but you're picking between giants here.

Cleveland Clinic, everybody thinks of as a heart disease place, and the fact is, they're an extraordinarily good all-around hospital, Comarow added. The Cleveland Clinic was ranked No. 1 in heart and heart surgery care for the 11th consecutive year.
