Summit on Nanotechnology, Materials, and the Future of Medicine to Be Hosted By Cleveland Clinic, ASM and Nano-Network

CLEVELAND, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Innovators in medical devices, clinical practice, and biomedical research will gather at Cleveland Clinic October 2-5 to discuss the latest materials advances and nanotechnology discoveries and how they are resulting in new medical applications.

The Materials, Medicine, and Nanotechnology Summit will be hosted by Cleveland Clinic, ASM International, and the Nano-Network as the anchor event of Nano-Week(TM) 2006, a five-day exploration of how nanotechnology is changing our world. The Summit is comprised of the biennial Cleveland Clinic NanoMedicine Summit and ASM's Materials & Processes for Medical Devices (MPMD) Conference and Exposition.

"This Summit is unique because it brings together materials experts, nanotechnology researchers, the engineers who design medical devices, and the practicing clinicians who use these devices and judge their efficacy in patients," said Shuvo Roy, Ph.D., Co-Director of BioMEMS Laboratory at Cleveland Clinic. "By facilitating open discussion, this meeting will identify challenges and solutions that can accelerate the medical adoption of advanced materials and nanotechnology into clinical applications."

The Summit will be valuable for academic nanotechnology scientists, medical device engineers, biomedical scientists, medical entrepreneurs, and corporate R&D managers who want to gain clinical perspective and identify opportunities for collaboration, Dr. Roy said. Physicians from a variety of specialties, including cardiac and vascular medicine, neurological diseases, and orthopedic and spine disorders, will also find the meeting useful in understanding how nanotechnology and materials are affecting the roadmap for the future of medicine.

Monday, October 2, will feature courses developed by ASM International and the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST). Designed for engineers and physicians who work with medical devices, the following materials and process-related courses will be offered with CME accreditation: Polymers for Medical Device Design; Basic Metallurgy for Medical Devices; Nitinol for Medical Devices; and Fracture, Fatigue, and Corrosion for Medical Devices.

Tuesday, October 3 through Wednesday morning, October 4, Cleveland Clinic and ASM will offer blended technical programming covering the spectrum of materials-related challenges in orthopedics, cardiovascular, neurology, nanotechnology, orthopedic tissue engineering, and minimally invasive surgery. Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, October 5, the Summit evolves into a Nanomedicine track focused on biomedical sensors, commercialization, drug delivery, nanoscale diagnostics and clinical opportunities. A parallel program track on Materials and Processes for Medical Devices will recognize the role of materials selection and processes in the development of new devices.
