CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- MedPanel, a leader in online medical market intelligence, announces the launch of Profiles in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer -- United States & Europe, the final release in its 2005-2006 Profiles in Oncology series. Profiles is a subscription service delivering four highly detailed, cancer-specific studies on a quarterly basis. Profiles studies evaluate clinical and commercial market opportunities for both current and emerging oncology products. Profiles is designed to provide in-depth analysis for organizations and companies considering the development, acquisition or launch of a novel therapeutic agent. The studies explore best practices, key outcomes measures, unmet medical needs, and future direction of treatment for a given indication while quantifying the trade-offs associated with varying levels of clinical performance on an agent-specific basis. The latest study offers analysis of treatment of the advanced and metastatic patient population.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1.2 million cases of lung cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year, and approximately 1.1 million deaths are attributed to lung cancer annually. Approximately 80% of lung cancer cases are characterized as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer accounts for 28% of cancer deaths, making it the single largest cause of cancer deaths in the United States. It is estimated that more than 172,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2006 and more than 163,000 people will die of the disease this year. This translates into approximately 137,600 new cases and 130,400 deaths associated with the non-small cell form of the disease in 2006. For Stage IV patients, one-year survival is estimated at roughly 20% with five-year survival at 1%. In Europe, the WHO estimates more than 375,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year and more than 347,000 deaths are recorded. In terms of NSCLC, the figures approximate 300,000 new cases and 277,600 deaths annually.
"Profiles in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer is an indispensable tool for drug developers in their efforts to fulfill the unmet need in this tumor type," said Priya Bhargava, Vice President of Content Development at MedPanel. "The combination of current market assessment with future landscape analysis provides the foundation necessary for successful product development. Clinical profile evaluation and competitive intelligence on investigational agents are just some of the insights Profiles provides."
Dr. Nina Karlin, of UCLA, said, "MedPanel offers the ideal platform for discussion of novel approaches to treating non-small cell lung cancer. Such an approach stimulates fruitful interaction among community and academic oncologists and is critical for the dissemination of recent advances and burgeoning research."
