Statement of M. Cass Wheeler, CEO, American Heart Association, World Conference on Tobacco OR Health July 13-15, 2006

Posted on: Thursday, 13 July 2006, 18:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- It's truly invigorating to see thousands of the world's leading scientists, government officials, and advocates come together to fight against a common enemy -- death and disability caused by tobacco. The World Conference on Tobacco OR Health is a unique opportunity to unveil new research and share best practices and expertise with the ultimate goal of reducing tobacco use across the globe.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States -- each year it kills nearly 440,000 people in the U.S., including more than 170,000 deaths from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. This conference will bring us closer to alleviating the problem by providing an atmosphere of collaboration. By recognizing and sharing the breadth of knowledge coming together this week, we will accelerate the progress being made to reduce death and disability from tobacco use.

Now, strong scientific evidence reinforces the danger of secondhand smoke. As the U.S. Surgeon General recently reported, secondhand smoke is a major risk factor for heart disease -- the nation's No. 1 killer. Tens of thousands of nonsmokers die in this country each year from coronary heart disease as a result of secondhand smoke. This evidence has energized the American Heart Association to increase its efforts to enact comprehensive smoke-free workplace policies in all communities. As the momentum builds against tobacco, it is important to remain encouraged by the daily movement both on a state- level as well as worldwide.
