MIV Therapeutics Details Breakthrough Scientific Research in Transcript of Recent Investor Conference Call

Posted on: Monday, 17 July 2006, 03:05 CDT

MIV Therapeutics (OTCBB:MIVT) (FWB:MIV), a leading developer of next-generation biocompatible coatings and advanced drug delivery systems for cardiovascular stents and other implantable medical devices, has announced the availability of a transcript of the conference call held on Tuesday, July 11, in which CEO Alan Lindsay and Company President Dr. Mark Landy discussed key elements of MIVT's bio-compatible stent technology, as well as recent scientific research and industry trends.

During the recent investor conference call, Dr. Landy discussed key advantages of its advanced stents with proprietary coatings based on Hydroxyapatite (HAp), resulting from HAp's exceptionally high levels of biocompatibility. He also discussed recent scientific research, as well as media reports that have highlighted the industry's need for new generations of safer stents.

"In the investor conference call we were able to highlight the important industry trends as well as the fundamental research that validates our business model and how we plan to capitalize on our recent achievements in development of a far safer biocompatible stent coating technology," said Mr. Lindsay.

Prominent among recently published scientific research was a study conducted by the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Sienna. The study further contributed to widespread validation of MIVT's unique approach to the development of new drug-eluting stents.

"This study is extremely important not only because it was conducted by an independent third party, but because it is strong validation of our drug delivery technology that we believe will lead to highly biocompatible drug-eluting stents that accelerate healing, reduce the potential for unwanted side effects and eliminate the requirement for long-term anti-clotting therapy," Dr. Landy said in the conference call.

The study, which was published in the prestigious Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, provided confirmation of the important safety and biocompatibility attributes of the Company's HAp-based coatings for vascular stents and other medical devices. Other medical industry concerns about current stent safety were published in a recent Wall Street Journal article.

"In short MIV drug-eluting stents will address almost all of the issues raised in those articles recently published in The Wall Street Journal and in the scientific community," Dr. Landy told investors during the call.

MIVT's HAp coatings are designed to substantially improve the safety and long-term performance of vascular stents because they do not trigger adverse reactions of the body's immune system commonly associated with existing stent technology. Such complications include inflammation, creation of thrombus (blood clots) and, importantly, re-narrowing of arteries due to endothelial tissue regrowth inside blood vessels in the area of newly implanted stents.

About MIV Therapeutics Inc.

MIV Therapeutics is developing a next-generation line of advanced biocompatible coatings for passive and drug-eluting applications on cardiovascular stents and a broad range of other implantable medical devices. The Company's ultra-thin coating formulation is designed to protect surrounding tissue from potentially harmful interactions with bare metallic stents. The Company's unique ultra-thin coating platform is derived from an organic material called Hydroxyapatite (HAp) which has demonstrated excellent safety and biocompatibility in vivo animal studies. Hydroxyapatite is a bioactive porous material that makes up the bone mineral and matrix of teeth and is widely used today as a bone substitute material and for coatings on implantable fixation devices in orthopedic, dental and other applications. The Company's novel polymer-free drug eluting technologies based on Hydroxyapatite could also provide an attractive alternative to current polymer-based drug eluting coatings on the stent market, which have been associated with undesirable medical effects. The Company's drug eluting coatings are additionally designed to suit a broad range of implantable medical devices that could benefit from highly customizable drug release profiles. MIVT has a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) with the University of British Columbia and has received Government grant for its research program on the "Development of Novel Drug Eluting Composite Coatings for Cardiovascular Stents," under the National Research Council-Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Under this sponsorship, the Company is expected to complete its drug-eluting research and development program and to reach product commercialization stage.
