Cord Blood America Announces It Is Nearing Collection of Adipose Tissue Stem Cells for Future Medical Use
Posted on: Thursday, 20 July 2006, 06:00 CDT
LOS ANGELES, July 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cord Blood America, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: CBAI) , the umbilical cord blood stem cell preservation company which is focused on bringing the life saving potential of stem cells to families nationwide, said that while Congress is busy debating the future of stem cell research, the Company is moving forward in developing one of the nation's first private storage companies to collect adult stem cells from adipose tissue for future medical use.
"We anticipate beginning this service in the Fourth Quarter of 2006," said Matthew Schissler, Cord Blood America Chairman and CEO. Duke University scientists are among the many who have published studies suggesting that stem cells obtained from human fat tissues, from liposuction for example, are capable of being transformed into nerve cells that could be used to treat brain and spinal cord injuries.
"Research shows that this virtually limitless supply of stem cells could become any type of cell and could be used to treat diseases ranging from diabetes to Parkinson's disease," Mr. Schissler said. Scientists at The University of California at Los Angeles have published original research demonstrating that adipose stem cells can be turned into nerve cells. University of Virginia research suggests that these adipose-derived stem cells can be used to repair or regenerate new blood vessels, cardiac muscle, nerves and bones, potentially helping heart attack victims, patients with brain and spinal cord injuries and people with osteoporosis.
"We are confident that stem cells from adipose tissues will be a practical and appealing source of stem cells for the medical therapies of the future," Mr. Schissler said. "There is absolutely no controversy about the use of these stem cells and we are proud to be on the cutting edge of this field. While Congress debates these issues, we are actually taking action."
