Statewide Association Says Governor's Call for More School Health Centers Would Increase Student Access to Health Care

Posted on: Monday, 24 July 2006, 18:00 CDT

While Governor Schwarzenegger's new proposal to increase school-based health centers may address his goal of making health care more affordable, the California School Health Centers Association (CSHC) thinks its greatest impact will be in increasing access to health care, which will also enhance the health and academic performance of California students.

"By increasing access to school health centers, we put health care right where kids are," explains CSHC Executive Director Serena Clayton. "Students cannot perform academically with untreated illnesses. School health centers are uniquely situated to bring health care professionals and educators together to address the often complicated and interrelated needs of children and families. These school-based health centers put health care in a place that's convenient, familiar and trusted."

Speaking today at the Governor's Health Care Affordability Summit here, Clayton explained that school health centers are usually located directly on school campus and provide primary care like any doctor's office or health clinic. In addition to offering primary care, mental health, reproductive health and dental care, all at no or low cost, the centers also provide screening and treatment or referral for a variety of health issues, including diabetes, vision and hearing loss, tuberculosis, asthma, cancer and hepatitis B.

"Schools are filled with adults who know the kids, see them on a daily basis and care about them," Clayton said. "School-based health centers are an innovative and proven approach and we applaud the Governor's efforts to expand them."

CSHC is a nonprofit membership and advocacy organization based in Oakland. Its members include California's 146 school health centers and other individuals and organizations that support school-based health care.
