MultiVu Video Feed: Older Does Not Always Mean Wiser: Postmenopausal Women Less Concerned About Breast Cancer Than Younger Women

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 July 2006, 12:00 CDT

NEW YORK, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Thought you knew all there was to know about the risks associated with breast cancer? Here are the facts: by age 40 the risk of developing breast cancer is one out of 208. By age 60, the risk jumps to one out of 24 and by age 80, the risk is one out of 14. Although age is the primary risk factor for breast cancer, a new Harris Interactive(R) survey found that most women don't know the facts:

* Only 37% of women 55 or older are concerned about developing breast cancer as they age * 75% of women didn't realize that being over age 50 is the primary breast cancer risk factor * 71% of women surveyed rank family history as a primary risk factor for breast cancer; in fact, family history accounts for only 15% of breast cancer cases * Approximately one-third of women surveyed mistakenly believe that the importance of a regular mammogram decreases with age

Strength in Knowing: The Facts and Fiction of Breast Cancer Risk is a national education campaign sponsored by the National Association for Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH), in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company. The goal is to provide postmenopausal women with the information needed to understand the risk factors for breast cancer, help them assess their personal risk and talk with their health care provider.
