HIMSS Urges Congress to Improve Healthcare Quality With Passage of HIT Legislation

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 July 2006, 18:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) today urged the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the Health Information Technology Promotion Act of 2006 (H.R. 4157) to improve healthcare quality for all Americans.

"We urge members of the House to expeditiously pass this legislation now as a critical step toward realizing the President's goal of electronic health records for most Americans," said HIMSS President/CEO H. Stephen Lieber. "We believe that H.R. 4157 contains provisions such as grants funding and Stark Reform that will help the industry to fulfill President Bush's goal of most Americans having an electronic health record by the year 2014. The passage of this legislation is critical to moving us towards these benefits."

"We commend the House leadership for shepherding this legislation through the Ways and Means, Energy and Commerce, and Rules Committees. That was no small feat and we appreciate their leadership. We know that the application of HIT offers widespread benefits to improving the quality of healthcare and decreasing costs. However, it is no good to most Americans if these technologies are not in the hands of providers when and where they are needed. H.R. 4157 represents crucial first steps in making HIT more widely available."

HIMSS is the healthcare industry's membership organization exclusively focused on providing leadership for the optimal use of healthcare information technology and management systems for the betterment of human health. Founded in 1961 with offices in Chicago, Washington D.C., and other locations across the country, HIMSS represents more than 20,000 individual members and over 300 corporate members that collectively represent organizations employing millions of people.
