Veterinary Diagnostics Institute (VDxI) Launches the First and Only Species-Specific Blood Test for the Detection of Heart Disease in Dogs

Veterinary Diagnostics Institute Inc. (VDxI), a specialty diagnostics lab services provider for companion animals, announces the launch of Canine CardioCare, the first canine-specific N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) blood test to detect heart disease in dogs. Canine CardioCare is patent pending.
"Natriuretic peptide testing for heart disease is already the standard of care in humans and it should also be for dogs," said Dr. Steven Ness, president and co-founder of VDxI. "Heart disease is often asymptomatic and many dog owners are unaware their pet has heart disease until disease reaches a state of heart failure. Testing for NT-proBNP is recommended for all dogs age 6 and older as well as high-risk breeds."
In an independent clinical study, NT-proBNP was shown to be elevated by more than 10-fold in dogs with heart disease. NT-proBNP is the preferred biomarker over BNP, the active hormone, as it has higher stability and hence higher values in disease states.
"With over 75M dogs in the USA, it is estimated that as many as 15 percent have heart disease," said Randy Ringold, CEO and founder of VDxI. "Used as part of a general wellness screen, we estimate that the market potential for Canine CardioCare is over $900 million."
