Does Health Care Quality Really Pay?

Posted on: Thursday, 27 July 2006, 12:01 CDT

TAMPA, Fla., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Inc. (ABQAURP) announces their 29th Annual Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Conference examining the latest developments in health care quality initiatives. The event, "Does Quality Pay?" will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois.

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) sent shock waves throughout the United States when they reported that large gaps exist in the quality of care that Americans receive when compared to the evidence for good clinical care. In response, a number of payers and providers have enacted numerous processes to improve quality.

"With policymakers and purchasers interested in improving quality, it is important for patients, purchasers, clinicians and hospitals to learn about the many initiatives underway," notes Arthur I. Broder, MD, ABQAURP Chairman of the Board. Furthermore, "this conference is a 'must attend' event for any health care professional who wants to stay abreast of the numerous programs taking place in the private and public sectors to improve quality that will dramatically change health care delivery and payment."

Join our national speakers including: * Carolyn Clancy, MD -- Director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) * Carole Flamm, MD -- Senior Medical Director, Office of Clinical Affairs, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association * Trent Haywood, MD JD -- Deputy Chief Medical Director, Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services * Mark Rattray, MD -- President, CareVariance * Jennifer Daley, MD -- Chief Medical Officer, Tenet HealthSystem * Marc Leib, MD JD -- Chief Medical Officer, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) * Steven Waldren, MD -- Assistant Director, Center for Health Information Technology, American Academy of Family Physicians * Jerry Reeves, MD -- Chief Medical Officer, H.E.R.E.I.U. Welfare Funds * Arthur Segal, MD -- Chair, American College of Radiology Committee on Drugs and Contrast * Josie Williams, MD -- Co-Chair, AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement * Daniel Buffington, PharmD -- CEO, Clinical Pharmacology Services

Among other topics, the speakers will address these issues at the conference:

* The New Quality Paradigm. Identify the latest quality, patient safety, and pay-for-performance (P4P) initiatives in the private and public sectors; * Assessing Stakeholder Impact. Highlight how health care stakeholders are impacted by health care quality reform initiatives; * Entering the Health Care Information Age. Review how information technology, data collection and reporting tools can be used to achieve better quality outcomes; * Understanding Provider Compensation Strategies. Discuss how hospital and physician compensation is affected by value reporting initiatives; * Establishing the ROI for Quality. Assess how quality initiatives establish a ROI by controlling the growth in health care spending.

"With over 400 health care professionals expected to attend, the conference will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to meet the leaders who are designing the performance value programs," noted conference co-chair, Joel V. Brill, MD. "In one day, attendees will have the chance to hear what hospitals, pharmacists, government, medical societies, purchasers, and payers have done to address the IOM challenge."
