Report Says 15,000 People in Canada Have AIDS but Don’t Know It

OTTAWA (CP) – A study by the Public Health Agency of Canada estimates that close to 15,000 Canadians have HIV-AIDS but don’t know it.

The study says about 58,000 people in Canada were living with AIDS last year, and about one quarter were unaware of their infections.

That means they could be unwittingly spreading the disease.

Chief Public Health Officer David Butler-Jones says the number of new infections in 2005 was about 2,300 to 4,500.

The total number of people living with AIDS has increased partly because new medical treatments have improved survival times.

Groups most at risk are men who have sex with men and people who inject drugs.
