Saint John's Health Center, a 317-bed, not-for-profit, acute-care hospital serving Santa Monica and neighboring communities, has announced the renewal of its longstanding affiliation with the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI).
Under the permanent alliance, the renowned programs of both facilities will be expanded through the development of new clinical and research disciplines and the construction of a new facility at Saint John's for the premier scientists and clinicians of the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Establishment of the permanent alliance was accomplished largely through the leadership of Carl McKinzie, Esq., Chairman of the Board of Saint John's Health Center, and Patrick Wayne, Chairman of the Board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute, Saint John's President and CEO Lou Lazatin said.
Under the permanent affiliation, Lazatin will serve as President and CEO of both organizations, and each will retain its own independent nonprofit status for fundraising and operational purposes. Armando E. Giuliano, M.D., Chief of Science and Medicine for the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's, will provide leadership for the Institute's internationally renowned clinical and translational cancer research. Donald L. Morton, M.D. will direct the nationally recognized Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program while continuing his groundbreaking melanoma research programs.
In announcing the renewal, Lazatin said she is working with the fundraising teams of both the Health Center and the JWCI to develop a joint strategic initiative for advancing cancer research and clinical programs, building premier facilities, and acquiring additional cutting-edge technologies to support the Institute's world-class scientists, physicians and staff. "We are excited and energized by these challenges and look forward to building upon the extraordinary national reputation of JWCI in the field of cancer research and treatment."
Lazatin added, "I want to acknowledge and thank Patrick Wayne and the entire Wayne family for their 25 years of vision, dedication and leadership in the fight against cancer. I am honored that Patrick will continue as chairman of the new Board for the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's. He provides the continuity and guidance that is essential to all of us as we enter this next phase to achieve great strides in providing advanced treatment for cancer."
Since 1981, the John Wayne name has been committed by the Wayne family to groundbreaking cancer research and education in memory of their father, who died of cancer. The John Wayne Cancer Institute has received worldwide acclaim for advances in melanoma (skin cancer), breast and colon cancer as well as for immune therapy of cancer. Other areas of research include prostate and liver cancer.
With its unique ability to rapidly turn scientific breakthroughs into innovative approaches to treatment and early detection, the JWCI provides immediate hope to cancer patients around the globe.
