HealthEast Offers Revolutionary Breast Cancer Treatment

Posted on: Monday, 7 August 2006, 18:00 CDT

Pioneering researcher for MammoSite(R), June Kim, MD, is excited to bring a revolutionary breast cancer treatment to women in the Twin Cities. Dr. Kim and HealthEast Cancer Care at St. John's Hospital now offer this novel treatment called MammoSite(R), which delivers radiation treatment from the inside out. It takes just days instead of weeks, is more convenient and has fewer side effects than conventional radiation treatment.

"I believe this is a significant step forward for breast cancer patients, who choose breast conservation therapy," said June Kim, MD, HealthEast radiation oncologist. "With MammoSite(R), patients can have post operative radiation therapy in only five days compared to the six to seven weeks it used to take."

MammoSite(R) Radiation Therapy System (RTS) delivers a high radiation dose through a miniature balloon directly to the original tumor area, where the cancer is most likely to recur. After a lumpectomy, the surgeon places the small balloon where the tumor was. Within days, the radiation oncologist inserts a tiny radioactive seed into the balloon and removes it a few minutes later. This process is repeated twice daily for just five days.

This is not a treatment option for all breast cancer patients, but for certain cancer patients who undergo lumpectomies. "For those well-selected women, MammoSite(R) offers equal protection against tumor recurrence and with less side effects than with conventional radiation treatment," said Dr. Kim.
