Posted on: Tuesday, 8 August 2006, 12:01 CDT
BALTIMORE, Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- David Hollis, M.D., chief medical officer for XLHealth's Medicare Health Support pilot program, has been invited to speak at the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) on August 14, 2006, in Nashville, Tenn. The conference serves as a forum for state lawmakers to exchange strategies and learn from experts on pressing issues such as healthcare and budget shortfalls.
Hollis will deliver a presentation on how effective disease management programs can help state legislators rein in the dramatic increase in Medicare costs and improve quality of care. He also will talk about XLHealth's model of disease management, its new Care Improvement Plus Medicare Advantage plan, and its new Medicare Health Support pilot program.
XLHealth's disease management programs assign each participant a personal support team that works closely with the participant to support his or her physicians' care plan. XLHealth's programs do not restrict access to physicians and provide additional supportive services, such as:
-- face-to-face contact with XLHealth personal support nurses -- preventive screenings -- home nursing visits as needed -- health education and coaching -- care plans and goal reports that empower participants to work with their physicians to achieve optimal care -- assistance with healthcare devices and equipment -- reminders for lab tests, eye exams and other essential services -- nutrition and depression evaluation and support -- support groups and personal counseling
XLHealth's disease management model improves the health of its participants, producing significant declines in the overall cost of health services. For example, over a four-year period, the company's innovative programs generated significant participant health improvements and savings for one of its clients:
-- Heart bypass surgery rates declining by nearly 60 percent -- Amputation rates declining by more than 55 percent -- Renal failure admissions declining by more than 45 percent
Prior to joining XLHealth, Hollis was chief medical officer for TennCare, Tennessee's health insurance program for Medicaid recipients and the uninsured. Earlier in his career, Hollis served as vice president and medical director of CIGNA in Tenn., Ark., and Ky. and, before that, was a practicing physician for 15 years.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system. This year's Annual Meeting and Exhibition takes place at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn., and will address issues related to healthcare, immigration, state budgets, higher education, identify theft, eminent domain, the global economy and pandemic preparedness.
