At Tomorrow's Community Forum, Assembly Member Lloyd Levine to Discuss Patient Care Problems at HCA/West Hills Medical Center

Posted on: Wednesday, 9 August 2006, 12:00 CDT

CANOGA PARK, Calif., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Tomorrow, Assembly member Lloyd Levine will hold a community forum with hospital caregivers, clergy and neighbors to discuss reports of patient care problems at HCA/West Hills Medical Center, HCA/ Los Robles Medical Center and HCA/Riverside Community Hospital. In the past six months, healthcare workers at the three hospitals have formally reported to the Department of Health Services nearly 60 incidents of unsafe staffing that put patients at risk. Caregivers say that understaffing is a result of HCA's profit strategy, as well as substandard wages and poor retirement benefits that disable caregiver recruitment and retention. Caregivers will also debut a video on the issue.

"I am deeply concerned about the chronic patient care problems reported by caregivers at West Hills Medical Center. At the forum, I want to hear directly from caregivers why so many Department of Health reports and other complaints are being filed about West Hills Medical Center. This community deserves the best patient care available, and I intend to make sure that happens," said Assembly member Lloyd Levine.

On July 19-21, nearly 3000 Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Surgical Technologists, Housekeepers, Clerical workers, Operating Room Technicians, Emergency Technicians, and other caregivers voted to authorize a future strike at HCA/West Hills Medical Center, HCA/Los Robles Medical Center and HCA/Riverside Community Hospital -- all owned by for-profit hospital corporation HCA. Less than a month earlier on June 28, over 900 caregivers authorized a strike at HCA-owned Good Samaritan Hospital and Regional Medical Center in San Jose. No strike date has been set. http://www.hcawatchcalifornia.org/
