DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2000, Midwest Health Plan was the first Michigan health plan to undergo the rigorous review and receive certification as a 'New Health Plan' by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA). This week, after a triennial review, NCQA awarded Midwest its highest accreditation status 'Excellent' for service and clinical quality that meets or exceeds NCQA's rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for everyone who works every day in our organization," said Dr. Mark Saffer, President and CEO of Midwest Health Plan. "Our commitment to providing health and wellness services to our members has put us in the top ranks of the healthcare industry," continued Saffer.
For an organization to become accredited by NCQA, it must undergo a rigorous survey and meet certain standards designed to evaluate the health plan's clinical and administrative systems. During a survey, plans are reviewed against more than 60 different standards. These standards fall into five broad categories: access to service, quality of providers, wellness and health maintenance programs, patient care for illnesses and managing chronic illnesses. NCQA also evaluates health plans in the areas of patient safety, confidentiality, consumer protection, access to service and continuous improvement. They also incorporate selected Health plan Employer and Data Information Sets (HEDIS(R)) clinical performance measures and Consumer Assessment of Health Plans (CAHPS(R)) consumer survey results. Accreditation surveys are done by teams of trained health care experts, including physicians.
"NCQA's 'Excellent' Accreditation status is reserved for the best health plans in the nation. It is only awarded to those plans that meet or exceed NCQA's rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement and deliver excellent clinical care," states Margaret E. O'Kane, President of NCQA.
Midwest Health Plan has been a licensed Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) since 1998 and is based in Southeastern Michigan. Midwest has more than 57,000 Medicaid enrollees and more than 15,000 county plan enrollees in Wayne, Washtenaw, Macomb, Livingston and St. Clair counties.
