Fem-V(TM) Lets Women Test Before They Treat; New OTC Diagnostic Pantiliner Now Available in Pharmacies

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 August 2006, 09:00 CDT

Fem-V(TM) Vaginal Infection Test, a new self-diagnostic product now available at select pharmacies and online at http://www.fem-v.com, evaluates both pH and dilution of vaginal discharge to properly diagnose the cause of a woman's vaginal infection. This dual mode of action is more accurate compared to first generation pH-only tests. The pantiliner test can quickly give women and their healthcare providers the information they need to help determine the most appropriate treatment for their vaginal infections, which plague millions of women every year.

Approximately 50 percent of women self-treat abnormal itching and discharge with over-the-counter (OTC) medications designed to treat yeast infections. The problem is that an estimated 70 to 80 percent of women do not have yeast infections; rather they may suffer from potentially more serious forms of infection such as Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), trichomoniasis (Trich) or a combination infection that requires a prescription treatment.

"Far too many women are misdiagnosing themselves and inappropriately self treating. They are looking for a quick fix with readily available over-the-counter treatments. They don't realize that mistreatment or delays in treating bacterial vaginitis greatly increases a woman's chance of developing more serious obstetric and gynecological conditions, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility. That is why I welcome the availability of a product like Fem-V. Now women can quickly test their vaginal discharge to know whether an OTC yeast treatment is the appropriate course of action," said Dr. Marie Savard, an internist, women's health expert and author.

The Fem-V test is easy to use: women presenting with symptoms of vaginal itching, abnormal discharge or odor wear a Fem-V pantiliner (attached to their underwear, like a traditional pantiliner) until a vaginal discharge appears. They then remove an indicator strip housed inside the liner and place it in a drying tray for 10 minutes. If a blue-green color stain appears on the Fem-V test, the discharge has an elevated level of pH and/or a watery discharge. Therefore, a doctor's visit is required to further evaluate a possible bacterial vaginosis infection, trichomoniasis, or other concern. If no blue-green color stain remains, the vaginal discharge has a normal pH and is not watery, indicating that the infection is likely due to yeast and an over-the-counter anti-fungal treatment may be considered.

"Fem-V empowers the millions of women who suffer from vaginitis to take control of their well-being and help ensure faster and healthier outcomes by testing and treating themselves properly," said Savard. "We understand the dangers of mistreating infections in other conditions, it is time that we apply the same philosophy to vaginal health. Fem-V is a great tool for women in managing their health care."
