OhioHealth Extends Patient Safety Initiative Into the Operating Room

As part of its ongoing patient safety initiative, Columbus-based OhioHealth plans to deploy McKesson's Horizon Surgical Manager(TM) solution in four of its hospitals, including Dublin Methodist Hospital, scheduled to open in October 2007. OhioHealth's goal is to automate in-depth clinical documentation, standardize clinical care and optimize resource management across its surgery suites. Once the solution is deployed, operating room (OR) staff can use the electronic clinical documentation capabilities in Horizon Surgical Manager to set automatic flags for missing patient data such as tests, consent forms and consults. The system will also help staff to improve on-time case starts and optimize OR capacity through its comprehensive surgical scheduling capability.
The OR initiative builds upon OhioHealth's strategic use of McKesson solutions to improve quality, safety and efficiency across its delivery network. The health system uses a wide range of Horizon Clinicals(R) solutions, including clinical decision support, medical imaging and a centralized laboratory information system. OhioHealth also deployed McKesson's comprehensive suite of solutions that integrates software, automation, packaging, distribution and consulting solutions to help reduce medication errors at every step where they can occur -- prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administering and monitoring. The bar-code technology used in McKesson's solution suite, called the McKesson Medication Safety Advantage(SM), has been shown to reduce medication administration errors by as much as 87%. At OhioHealth, the system has enabled nursing staff to realize a 92% reduction in medication errors.
"The new surgery system is a win-win for us," said Robert Millen, chief operating officer, OhioHealth. "It squarely supports our mission to be stewards of the community's health and our ongoing commitment to patient safety. It ensures that the appropriate resources are available in the operating room, improving efficiencies and saving valuable healthcare dollars. By streamlining scheduling and containing supply costs, we expect to maximize our OR capacity, resulting in a positive effect on patient care."
The Horizon Surgical Manager solution is also designed to provide important patient safety checkpoints. For example, staff can program the scheduling module to ask about latex allergies and automatically request designated latex-free supply items where possible. If no substitute exists, the system alerts staff to the potential problem.
"This software is designed to enhance the quality care our family of healthcare workers provides," said Mark Montoney, MD, chief medical officer, OhioHealth. "Every day OhioHealth looks for new ways to deliver, support and enhance the patient experience. We expect Horizon Surgical Manager to help us do just that -- by more timely documentation of surgical data and making that data available during and after the surgical procedure."
Horizon Surgical Manager's functionality also includes OR inventory management, anesthesia and clinical documentation, patient billing and decision support, including statistical analysis and business intelligence dashboards. The clinical documentation (i.e., perioperative charting) component incorporates the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS) developed in conjunction with the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).
"McKesson is pleased to expand our relationship with OhioHealth as its continues to enhance patient safety with the added benefit of improving management of supplies and resources in the surgical suite," said Duncan James, group president of Business Performance Solutions, McKesson Provider Technologies. "Hospitals are increasingly turning to the integration offered by our surgical management solution as an effective tool to improve enterprise scheduling and supply management. We look forward to working with OhioHealth staff during the implementation phase and supporting them to realize the expected performance improvements."
