Important findings from the National Institute of Health's (NIH) 2nd Interdisciplinary Women's Health Research Symposium are presented in the July/August 2006 issue (Vol. 15, No. 6) of Journal of Women's Health, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. (www.liebertpub.com). The introduction by Vivian W. Pinn, M.D., Associate Director for Research on Women's Health and Director, Office of Research on Women's Health at NIH, and poster abstracts are available free online at www.liebertpub.com/jwh.
This annual symposium brings together scholars participating in the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program and researchers who contribute to the Specialized Centers of Research on Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women's Health (SCOR).
"We now have 6 years of experience in addressing women's health research through interdisciplinary approaches. Many of the research results now becoming available will lead us forward to interventions that will improve the health of women and men," writes Vivian W. Pinn, M.D.
The BIRCWH program incorporates three key concepts: an emphasis on interdisciplinary research, a strong focus on mentoring, and dedication to career development. It spans a broad range of subject areas including mental health, diabetes, cardiovascular health, neurological disorders, health disparities and sex-gender research, reproductive health, cancer, genetics, and reproductive health.
The SCOR research centers aim to promote research on women's health, with a special emphasis on the role and importance of sex/gender factors. The Office of Research on Women's Health currently supports 11 SCORs, which receive funding from six different NIH institutes and the Food and Drug Administration.
The abstracts highlighted in this issue of the journal demonstrate the scope and extent of progress that has been made through interdisciplinary approaches to studying women's health and sex/gender research.
Journal of Women's Health is an authoritative, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal published ten times a year. Under Editor-In-Chief Susan G. Kornstein, M.D., and Deputy Editor Wendy S.
