BioMarker Group to Relocate to the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis

Posted on: Monday, 21 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

KANNAPOIIS, N.C., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The BioMarker Group and affiliates GlycoMark and Onconix announced on Monday, in Kannapolis with other events, it will relocate to the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis.

Eric Button, CEO of BioMarker is enthusiastic about the opportunities for breakthrough research the campus will provide, particularly in the field of nutrition, as well as the vision of campus financier David H. Murdock, chairman and owner of Castle & Cooke, Inc. and Dole Food Company, Inc.

"We are very excited about the move to Kannapolis," said Button, who is a veteran of the medical diagnostics industry. "Our efforts in medical diagnostics and diabetes are very much in line with Mr. Murdock's vision of a 'biopolis' focused on human nutritional research. "

BioMarker recently completed a study with Dr. John Buse, director of the diabetes center at the UNC School of Medicine and vice president of the American Diabetes Association, on the clinical utility of the GlycoMark blood test. GlycoMark recently received FDA approval and is being used nationwide by physicians to monitor therapy of patients with diabetes.

Button added, "Projections are that by the year 2020 over 300 million people worldwide will develop diabetes if we continue on this track - overloading and devastating our health care system. We look forward to leveraging our knowledge of medical tests for diabetes with the expertise being developed at the new campus."

Onconix, a biotechnology start-up company focused on the development of cancer diagnostic tests and an investment of the BioMarker Group, is led by Dr. Scott Foster who will also be working out of the new offices in Kannapolis. Onconix is developing a new blood test for cervical cancer, the CSA (Cervical Specific Antigen) test, which is the subject of an ongoing study at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA).

The BioMarker Group provides international advisement and investments in companies developing and commercializing novel biomarkers. In conjunction with partners Toyota Tsusho America and Nippon Kayaku, the BioMarker Group recently launched GlycoMark, a novel diabetes biomarker.

The NCRC is a scientific and economic revitalization project in Kannapolis, N.C., supported by David H. Murdock, owner and chairman of Dole Food Co., involving the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and the N.C. Community College System.
