The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying patients recently discharged from Rush-Copley Medical Center on their perceptions of their inpatient and emergency room visit and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study(SM).
The telephone-based research conducted among Rush-Copley patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience. These drivers, which were identified in the national study, include: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.
"Based on the rigorous standards of our national hospital service performance research, only 20 percent of the hospitals in the nation will be qualified to achieve this distinction," said David Stefan, executive director of the healthcare division of J.D. Power and Associates. "Rush-Copley Medical Center is among an elite class of hospitals."
Inpatient Satisfaction
Rush-Copley Medical Center exceeds the national benchmark study score for overall patient satisfaction by a notable margin. The hospital performs particularly well compared to the national study in providing patients with a comfortable stay, with particularly high ratings for the concern for comfort during procedures and comfort of room.
Rush-Copley also performs well relative to the national study in providing care with dignity and respect, especially for hospital personnel's respect for privacy, courtesy of nurses, courtesy of discharge personnel, and courtesy of tests and treatments personnel.
Rush-Copley scores higher than the national study ratings on the 10 most important attributes that contribute to the various study measures. Rush-Copley Medical Center achieves the greatest difference compared to the national scores for speed and efficiency of discharge and nurses' performance of their regular duties.
Additionally, patients were asked to rate their level of trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay. Among Rush-Copley patients, 65 percent indicate they have more or much more trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay. Furthermore, Rush-Copley patients are more likely to experience an increase in trust and confidence in the hospital because of their experience, compared to the national average.
Rush-Copley patients were also asked about loyalty. Regarding their likelihood to return, 94 percent stated they definitely will or probably will do so, and 92 percent said they definitely will or probably will do so. Rush-Copley patients are more likely to return and recommend the Medical Center than patients surveyed in the national study.
Emergency Department
Rush-Copley Medical Center exceeds the national benchmark study score for overall emergency department satisfaction. The hospital performs particularly well compared to the national study in treating patients with dignity and respect, receiving notably high ratings for the respect for privacy and courtesy of the nurses.
Rush-Copley also performs well relative to the national study in providing emotional support to patients during their visit to the emergency department, especially for the confidence and trust in the radiology personnel's skill level and on the treatment of family and friends.
A large proportion of Rush-Copley patients indicate they have more or much more trust and confidence in the emergency department after their most recent visit. Additionally, Rush-Copley's emergency department patients have a greater increase in trust and confidence than patients surveyed in the national study.
Non-government, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient services, emergency department services and outpatient services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for recognition.
