Medical Associates Clinic Offers Improved Patient Care With New Electronic Health Records

Medical Associates Clinic (MAC) has implemented the TouchWorks(TM) Electronic Health Record (EHR) from Chicago-based Allscripts to enhance the quality and efficiency of patient care for the residents of central South Dakota. The state-of-the art, web-based system connects patients with their physicians better than ever before. Now, if a Medical Associates' physician is on-call or at an outreach clinic, the EHR will provide them with instant access to their patient's information rather than relying on unwieldy, error-prone paper charts and memory. With the new EHR system, physicians are able to electronically take notes and send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy, which will decrease errors and increase efficiency. Soon MAC will use the EHR to connect directly to the in-house lab eliminating patient order responsibility.
Did You Know?
1. Paper Medical Records are misplaced or missing in 30% of patient visits. 2. A diagnosis is not recorded 40% of the time when using paper charts. 3. The primary benefits of EHRs are to increase patient safety, lower medication expenses, and decrease billing errors. What is the secret of an EHR? The Electronic Health Record leverages the power of computers and the Internet to give physicians the information they need when and where they need it. By comparison, paper records are subject to being misplaced, lost, or damage by fire and water. Due to the volumes of paper involved, no "back-ups" or copies are maintained in most cases.
"We chose to purchase an EHR because we are progressive physicians and want to be ahead of the game with the latest in patient-care technology," says Robert Allison, M.D. FACP. "When we moved into our new building, we wanted to avoid building more space for paper charts. More importantly, we wanted to improve patient care with instant access to charts from the clinic, from the hospital, and from home. Medical Associates Clinic also wanted to improve patient safety by ordering prescriptions electronically, which decreases problems with illegible physician hand writing."
