Dedham Planning Board Approves Hebrew SeniorLife's Senior Campus Project

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 August 2006, 12:00 CDT

On Monday, August 21, the Dedham Planning Board voted to grant a special permit and site plan approval to Hebrew SeniorLife (HSL) that will allow the organization to go forward with its plans to build a senior health-care and housing campus on 160 acres in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Board approval followed a long and thorough evaluation process, which included more than 15 well-attended public hearings. Throughout the project, HSL took steps to respond to the concerns expressed by the board and the community about the proposed project.

During the Conservation Commission and Planning Board processes, HSL agreed to use no DWWD water for irrigation, to open its state-of-the-art weather station for public education purposes, to implement a series of traffic mitigation measures, to commit to specific green building elements and to make an annual cash contribution to the Town.

HSL's presence in Dedham will bring many benefits to the community. HSL will open its walking trails to the public; the campus playing fields will be used by the Town recreation programs; HSL will provide health screenings, lectures and programs for Dedham seniors; and create health-career internships for Dedham High School students. Dedham residents will have in their town one of the country's premier long-term care and assisted living facilities. The campus will infuse significant dollars into the local economy not only through jobs and use of local businesses but also through the significant fees for permitting.

The proposed HSL project will include a continuum of senior services designed to allow seniors to age in place and receive appropriate supports to meet their needs. The innovative program concepts for long-term care, assisted living and senior supportive housing will reflect a new standard for senior care and service. The plans for the campus also include a K-8 school. This inclusion of a school facility on site is designed to foster interaction between generations.

Hebrew SeniorLife is recognized internationally as a leader in the area of senior health care, housing and aging research. Through an integrated seven-site network, Hebrew SeniorLife provides long-term care; short-term, sub-acute care; research and training; adult day health; independent supportive senior housing; a continuing care retirement community; home health care; and services and programs for seniors in the community.
