Majority of 'America's Best Hospitals,' As Named By U.S. News & World Report, Use Molnlycke's Biogel(R) Surgical Gloves

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

NORCROSS, Ga., Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Molnlycke Health Care US, LLC, the only major medical glove company with an exclusively powder-free surgical glove line, reports that more than half of the hospitals named recently to U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" use the Biogel(R) brand surgical gloves.(1)

Biogel(R) gloves are available in a variety of latex and non-latex styles to address both general surgery and specialty needs. Made from high-tech material to which is bonded a thin inner coating of acrylate terpolymer, the smooth inner surface allows Biogel gloves to be easily donned with damp or dry hands without the need for a powder lubricant. This not only eliminates the risk of powder-related postoperative complications, but also reduces the risk of allergic reactions to aerosolized natural rubber latex proteins.

"For 13 years, we have been using Biogel(R) powder-free surgical gloves exclusively. With the help of Molnlycke Health Care, we created a latex-safe environment to help ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare workers at Brigham and Women's Hospital," says Peggy Doyle, director of perioperative nursing, surgical services, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, which is ranked 11th of the top 14 hospitals on the "Honor Roll" in this year's "America's Best Hospitals" list.(2)

U.S. News & World Report annually ranks hospitals on an overall basis as well as according to 16 specialties. The 2006 list identifies 176 hospitals ranking best in the 16 specialties and 14 hospitals on the "Honor Roll" with a top position in at least six specialties.(3)

(1) Based on annual surgical procedures, a minimum of 20% Biogel glove usage at a facility was used as the criteria to qualify Biogel users. All specialties were included except those clearly not involving sterile surgical procedures, e.g. psychiatry and rehabilitation. Data is on file and available upon request.
