Passage of School Health Centers Act Will Increase Student Health Care Access and Help Kids Succeed in School

The School Health Centers Act of 2006, AB 2560 (Ridley-Thomas), passed its last legislative hurdle last night and moves to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk for his signature before it becomes law.
The bill requires the California Department of Health Services, in cooperation with the State Department of Education, to establish a program to advance school health centers by helping to start new ones, while also strengthening current centers by collecting data and identifying new, sustainable sources of funding.
The California School Health Centers Association (CSHC), the sponsor of the bill, believes this new program will provide critical support to California's school health centers. "School health centers put quality health care right where kids are," explains CSHC Executive Director Serena Clayton. "We know that school health centers are important because they ensure access to care and help kids succeed in school. When you bring health care professionals and educators together, you can really change the lives of some of our most at-risk children and youth."
The bill's author, Assembly Member Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-48) said, "I thank my Legislative colleagues for their support of the School Health Centers Act of 2006. Most public schools will be back in session after Labor Day. California has only 146 school health centers but far more are needed. AB 2560 puts students first, and it gets our schools on the right track by making health care services available where students need them most... at school."
The California School Health Centers Association is a nonprofit membership and advocacy organization based in Oakland. Its members include California's 146 school health centers and other individuals and organizations that support school-based health care.
