NeuroMetrix, Inc. Notes Publication of Study Validating NC-Stat System for Detection of Diabetic Polyneuropathy

Posted on: Wednesday, 30 August 2006, 12:00 CDT

NeuroMetrix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NURO), a medical device company focused on the development and sale of proprietary products that help physicians diagnose neuropathies announced today the publication of a study that examined the diagnostic accuracy of the NC-stat System for detection of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN), which affects over 50% of people with diabetes. DPN has a central role in the development of diabetic foot ulcers, predisposes elderly diabetics to falls and fractures, and is associated with a significant reduction in quality of life. This study provides further support for the clinical utility and diagnostic accuracy of the NC-stat System.

The study, published in the September issue of Diabetes Care, is entitled "Validation of a Novel Point-of-Care Nerve Conduction Device for the Detection of Diabetic Sensorimotor Polyneuropathy". Diabetes Care, published by American Diabetes Association (ADA), is the leading peer-reviewed journal of clinical research into the nation's fifth leading cause of death by disease.

The abstract and article can be accessed at: http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/29/9/2023

In the study, 72 patients with Type I and Type II diabetes had their sural nerves tested using the NC-stat System and also by a specialized electrodiagnostic laboratory. Abnormalities in the sural nerve are generally regarded as the earliest objective manifestation of DPN. The study concluded that the correlation between the two sets of measurements was excellent, with a correlation coefficient of 0.95. The study also determined that the NC-stat sural nerve amplitude had a diagnostic sensitivity of 92% for DPN.

The study authors concluded "(The NC-stat System) has excellent diagnostic accuracy for detecting electrophysiological abnormality in the sural nerve of patients who have diabetes. This automated device represents an alternative to conventional nerve conduction studies for the diagnosis of diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy."

Shai N. Gozani, M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "This Class I evidence-based study was a rigorous and blinded evaluation of the NC-stat. The study further confirms the robust accuracy of the NC-stat in measuring sural nerve conduction and detecting DPN, which are among the most challenging traditional nerve conduction measurements. These results, along with over 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals and abstracts at major medical conferences, further detail the clinical and technical validity of the NC-stat."

About NeuroMetrix

NeuroMetrix is a medical device company that is establishing a new standard of care through the design, development and sale of proprietary products that help physicians diagnose neuropathies. Neuropathies are diseases of the peripheral nerves and parts of the spine that frequently are caused by or associated with diabetes, low back and leg pain and carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as other clinical disorders. The NC-stat System, the Company's neuropathy diagnostic system, has been on the market since May 1999 and is presently used in over 4,000 physician's offices and clinics in the United States. The Company holds issued utility patents covering a number of important aspects of the NC-stat System.
