The Roar of Harley-Davidsons and 25,000 Determined New Yorkers to Be Heard in Central Park

Posted on: Friday, 1 September 2006, 12:00 CDT

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, September 10th at 9:20 am, the sound of 25,000 runners and walkers will be heard in Central Park. This group of New Yorkers, determined to stomp out breast cancer, will be participating in the Komen New York City Race for the Cure(R). The Race participants will be led down Central Park West by over a dozen women on Harleys -- all dressed in pink.

The Race is the signature fundraiser for The Greater New York City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and is presented locally by Lincoln Mercury and Smith Barney/Citigroup. Guest Hosts include: CBS 2's Maurice DuBois, Kate Sullivan and Tamsen Fadal, 106.7 Litefm's Christine Nagy. Expected guests include: Sopranos Actress Maureen Van Zandt, Syndicated TV Star Judge Judy Shiendlin, the Knicks City Dancers, Actress and Director of Southern Comforts Judith Ivey, members of the cast of As the World Turns and Guiding Light and Donna Hanover, Co-Host of The Morning Show WOR Radio 710 AM.

This year more than 200,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,000 will die from the disease. More than 1,500 breast cancer survivors and hundreds of dedicated New Yorkers will set out to change that statistic by participating in the Race for the Cure(R), which funded more than $3.2 million this year in education, screening and treatment programs in Greater New York City and national and local research for a cure. Funded programs address a range of breast health needs including screening coordination for garment workers, a hotline manned by trained breast cancer survivors and legal services for women and families dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis.

The Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series is the largest series of 5K run/walks in the world. The Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrating breast cancer survivorship and honoring those who have lost their battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series, the Komen Foundation along with its Affiliate Network is able to fund breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Since its origination in Dallas in 1982, the Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a series of more than 100 Races with more than one million people expected to participate in 2006.

"We hope the 2006 Komen New York City Race for the Cure(R) will be our most successful Race ever," said Iris Dankner, Komen Greater NYC Board Member and Race Chair. "Every person who participates makes a critical difference in our efforts to eradicate this disease. We encourage people to run, walk, volunteer or contribute to support someone else registered for the Race."
