Insomnia Agents Claimed 82% of Sales for the Sleeping Disorders Market

Posted on: Monday, 4 September 2006, 12:00 CDT

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c41587) has announced the addition of Sleep Disorders: Promotion and Awareness Will Drive Market Growth to their offering.

Sleep disorders affect more than 200 million people worldwide. It is generally accepted that insufficient sleep contributes significantly to automobile accidents and fatalities, work-related injuries, mood depression, and, in general, impaired health. Nevertheless, all sleep disorders are significantly under treated. This level of unmet need presents a significant market opportunity, and sleep disorders increasingly attract the attention of pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, the imminent patent expiration of the blockbuster agent zolpidem (Sanofi-Aventis's Ambien) has attracted the attention of generics manufacturers.

Consequently, the sleep disorders market is likely to experience great change over the next ten years. In this Decision Resources, Inc. report, we focus on the four sleep disorders thought to have major significance for physical and mental health: insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and sleep apnea. We examine their etiology and prevalence, current and emerging therapies, the state of the current market, and the outlook for the sleep disorders market in the United States, Europe, and Japan during the period 2005-2015.

Business Implications:

Sleep disorders affect more than 200 million people in the three major market regions we cover. Sales of agents for treatment of the four most significant sleep disorders exceeded $3 billion in 2005, with insomnia agents claiming 82% of the market.

Currently, the insomnia market is dominated by sales of zolpidem (Sanofi-Aventis's Ambien/ Ambien CR). Zolpidem has maintained its position despite the launch of two new agents, eszopiclone (Sepracor's Lunesta) and ramelteon (Takeda's Rozerem). However, we expect sales of zolpidem to peak in 2006 and then decline sharply as a result of generics erosion and the emergence of newer hypnotics.

In 2005, ropinirole (GlaxoSmithKline's Requip) became the first agent to receive approval for treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS). In the first quarter after approval, sales of ropinirole tripled, based in large part on GSK's extensive awareness campaign. Overall, however, we expect this market to remain small and highly fragmented owing to emerging agents and significant off-label prescribing.

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising and awareness campaigns have a significant impact on the sleep disorders market. Extensive promotion of zolpidem and eszopiclone contributed to strong growth of the insomnia market, and awareness of RLS helped boost the adoption of ropinirole. We expect DTC advertising to continue to play a significant role in the launch of new agents, while sales of ramelteon will be hindered by Takeda's minimal promotion.
