Hospira Announces New Contract With HealthTrust to Provide Pain Management Infusion Pumps to Members
Posted on: Thursday, 7 September 2006, 12:00 CDT
LAKE FOREST, Ill., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hospira, Inc. , a leading global hospital products company, today announced a new, national agreement with HealthTrust Purchasing Group (HealthTrust) to provide its member organizations access to Hospira's line of pain management infusion pumps. The contract provides access to Hospira's LifeCare PCA(R) and GemStar(R) pain management infusion systems.
Hospira has an extensive history in pain management and the ability to meet the needs of HealthTrust's member facilities by providing multiple device options for managing patients' pain.
"As a pioneer in this space, Hospira has more than 20 years of experience developing PCA technology. We are extremely pleased to add HealthTrust members as customers and offer them access to our industry-leading devices," said Pete Baker, vice president and general manager, Commercial Service Operations, Hospira.
The LifeCare PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) infusion system, introduced in early 2006, uses an integrated approach to help clinicians reduce potential medication and dose programming errors, while allowing hospital patients the flexibility to control the delivery of their pain medication, within specified limits. LifeCare PCA is the only pain management medication delivery system with a built-in bar-code reader compatible with pre-filled, bar-coded medication vials.
LifeCare PCA offers enhanced safety features through its compatibility with Hospira MedNet(R) software, a customizable software system that helps hospitals define medication dose limits and track intravenous (I.V.) drug delivery to help prevent errors. Hospira MedNet software helps prevent drug errors by confirming that the medication in the bar-coded drug vial inserted in the pump is infused within hospital-defined dose guidelines.
Hospira has a strong history of leadership in the PCA market. In 1984, the company, as part of the hospital products business of Abbott Laboratories, introduced the industry's first patient-controlled analgesia pump. Over the last two decades, Hospira's PCA devices have treated more than 30 million patients with more than 60 million individual therapy administrations. Today, seven out of 10 PCA devices used in hospitals in the United States are Hospira products.
The GemStar pain management system offers safe and effective pain management medication infusion for patients in a variety of ambulatory care environments, ranging from hospital to home-care settings. The portable pumps offer effective pain management in a small, lightweight design, allowing patients greater independence and caregivers additional flexibility in managing their care.
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. About HealthTrust Purchasing Group
