Announcing the 2006 Komen Boston Race for the Cure(R)

BOSTON, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Participants at the 14th Annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Boston Race for the Cure(R) will take a bold step in the fight against breast cancer on Sunday, September 10. Mayor Menino and his wife Angela will welcome all participants in this annual 5K Race organized by the Komen Massachusetts Affiliate. Race proceeds make a direct impact on eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment across the state of Massachusetts through over $600,000 in local programs and grants. More than 6,000 walkers and runners, including an estimated 500 breast cancer survivors, are expected to participate in this year's Race held at the UMASS Boston Campus.

The 2006 Komen Boston Race for the Cure(R) promises to be an uplifting and joyful acknowledgement of breast cancer survivors. A sunrise breakfast will be held for all survivors and co-survivors to enjoy before the start of the Race. The Pink Parade of Survivors will lead the Race participants to the starting line. Following the Race, registered Survivors will receive a special gift bag, compliments of our generous corporate contributors.

The Massachusetts Affiliate is proud to welcome many regional and national organizations who support the Komen Race for the Cure(R) through product and financial donations. Last year marked the largest Komen Boston Race for the Cure(R) to date, with 5,700 runners and walkers raising over $600,000 to fund Massachusetts programs and grants. The remaining 25% was directed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Grant Program to fund research on a national and international level.

Komen Massachusetts Affiliate

The Boston Komen Race for the Cure(R) is organized by the Komen Massachusetts Affiliate, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. The Affiliate operates under a local mission to celebrate, support and promote Survivors and Survivorship with 75% of proceeds going to local mission related projects and grants and 25% of proceeds funding national breast cancer research through the Komen Foundation Research Program.

By understanding the gaps in coverage and the need, the Massachusetts Affiliate engages in a community based grant-making process to improve state-wide education, prevention, screening, and treatment outcomes. In 2006, the Massachusetts Affiliate reached over $1 million in revenues.
