VHA Health Foundation to Convene First Disaster Preparedness Forum for Hospital CEOs, Senior Executives

Posted on: Monday, 11 September 2006, 12:00 CDT

IRVING, Texas, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The VHA Health Foundation, a national resource helping hospitals prepare for disasters, announced today that it will convene the first disaster preparedness conference designed exclusively for Chief Executive Officers and senior leaders of American hospitals.

WHAT: Preparing for the Next Disaster: A Hospital Leadership Forum is the first forum created for the executives and senior leaders of American hospitals to share experiences, best practices and planning for natural disasters or attacks.

WHEN: Nov. 29-30, 2006 WHERE: Omni Royal Orleans, New Orleans WHO: Senior hospital leaders from more than 100 U.S. hospitals and: * Assistant Secretary of Health Admiral John O. Agwunobi, MD, M.B.A., M.P.H, the nation's official public health advisor, Assistant Secretary for Health, responsible for disaster preparedness * Former FEMA director James Lee Witt, a special advisor to Louisiana's governor on recovery after Hurricane Katrina, and for seven years Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency under President Bill Clinton. * CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who covered Hurricane Katrina and wrote "Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival."

WHY: Hospitals are magnets in disasters and the failure to plan adequately for the inevitable can be catastrophic. Last year, the whole world watched in horror as health care workers at a New Orleans hospital carried patients to the roof to escape the rising water, lost contact with the outside world for days and ran out of the most basic medical supplies. Meanwhile, a report from the Trust for America's Health said the nation's level of emergency preparedness warranted a D+ and hospitals didn't fare much better.

Those attending the forum will participate in disaster scenario planning, be introduced to a newly developed tool for measuring preparedness, learn of new preparedness solutions and tour devastated areas of New Orleans.
