The 340B Prime Vendor Program Adds NuvaRing(R) to Growing List of Women's Health Care Products for Participants

The 340B Prime Vendor Program, managed by HealthCare Purchasing Partners International(R) (HPPI) announced today that it has contracted with Organon USA Inc., to provide NuvaRing(R), the once monthly contraceptive.
NuvaRing(R) is a flexible vaginal ring about two inches in diameter and contains the hormones etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, which are similar to the active ingredients in some oral contraceptives. NuvaRing(R) is inserted into the vagina once a month and kept in place for three weeks. During that time, NuvaRing(R) slowly releases a low dose of hormones to prevent pregnancy.
As of July 15, 2006, Organon has agreed to provide NuvaRing(R) to 340B Prime Vendor Program participants at a discounted price. "While many Title X agencies, with limited budgets, have been unable to afford the contraceptive products representing the latest advances in therapy, it is our hope this new contract will serve to improve access and utilization of the product among the low-income and uninsured women treated within public health care facilities within the U.S.," said Chris Hatwig, senior director of the 340B Prime Vendor Program.
HPPI is the Office of Pharmacy Affairs awarded contractor and serves as the Prime Vendor for the 340B Program. The Prime Vendor's role is to secure sub-ceiling discounts on outpatient drug purchases and discounts on other pharmacy related products and services for participating public hospitals, community health centers, Title X family planning clinics, and other safety-net health care providers electing to join the program.
340B Prime Vendor Program
The Prime Vendor Program was established to increase the discounts already offered under Section 340B of the U.S. Public Health Service Act, providing low-cost drugs to clinics, hospitals and programs for low-income Americans. Over 11,000 providers across the country qualify to participate in the discount program at no cost, and more than 2,800 facilities are currently enrolled. HealthCare Purchasing Partners International, an Irving, Texas-based health care group purchasing organization co-owned by VHA Inc. and the University HealthSystem Consortium, administers the program.
