Medivance's Patient Cooling System Recognized By Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards

LOUISVILLE, Colo., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Medivance Inc.'s Arctic Sun therapeutic temperature management system today was named a runner up in the Wall Street Journal's 2006 Technology Innovation Awards. The non-invasive Arctic Sun, used by critical care units and emergency departments in hospitals across the globe, was recognized as a breakthrough medical technology in the Medical Device category.
"In selecting winners and runners up, the judges considered whether the technology truly represents a breakthrough from conventional methods rather than just an incremental improvement," said Wall Street Journal News Editor John Leger.
Prior to the introduction of the Arctic Sun, there were no safe, effective, precise and easy-to-apply methods for controlling patient temperature.
For decades, doctors have attempted to control body temperature therapeutically using ineffective, primitive methods such as fans, ice and cooling blankets to reduce the often ravaging damage caused by stroke, cardiac arrest, brain injury, high fevers, trauma and other critical illnesses. Since the introduction of the Arctic Sun two years ago, a growing body of clinical data shows that lowering body temperature may effectively limit neurologic damage. Last fall, the American Heart Association recommended that therapeutic hypothermia be used to treat certain cardiac arrest victims.
"The Arctic Sun's patented technology can transfer significantly more thermal energy than conventional products, making it an effective, efficient, and very precise cooling technology without resorting to the risk of invasive methods," said Medivance CEO Robert Kline. "As well, a major advantage of the non-invasive Arctic Sun is that it enables nurses to immediately implement patient cooling, resulting in rapid initiation of therapy when minutes count."
More than 600 entries from around the world were considered for the prestigious Wall Street Journal awards.
