HFSA Scientific Meeting Sessions Highlight Importance of Psychological Care for Heart Failure Patients
Posted on: Tuesday, 12 September 2006, 09:01 CDT
SEATTLE, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The mental and emotional state of heart failure patients is one of the special focuses of the Heart Failure Society of America's (HFSA) 10th Annual Scientific Meeting, taking place through tomorrow at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle. HFSA's annual scientific meeting features presentations, panel discussions and debates on innovations in research, recent clinical trials, and improvements in heart failure treatment. Additionally, this year's conference will examine heart failure within the scope of broader U.S. healthcare concerns.
"Studies are revealing the psychological condition of heart failure patients can have significant impact on longevity and quality of life, despite medical treatment," said Dr. Gary Francis, HFSA president and Director of Acute Cardiac Care, Cleveland Clinic. "This aspect of care is growing as a topic of heart failure research and clinical investigation, and we believe it deserves a closer look this year."
HFSA meeting presenter Nancy Albert, PhD, Director of Nursing Research and Innovation-Division of Nursing and Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Cleveland Clinic's Kaufman Center for Heart Failure, explains that negative emotion and heart failure have been shown to have a mutually compounding relationship. "Worsening depression is associated with worsening heart failure symptoms and decreased activity. These changes may lead patients to develop a sense of hopelessness that worsens depression," said Albert.
Related HFSA Annual Scientific Meeting sessions include: "Measuring Quality of Life" - Monday, September 11, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM "The Elderly Patient" - Wednesday, September 13, 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM "Depression in HF" - Wednesday, September 13, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
