Smoking Ban Makes Scottish Pubs 'Healthier'

Posted on: Tuesday, 12 September 2006, 12:01 CDT

The majority of bar staff working in Scotland believe their work place is healthier following the introduction of a ban on smoking, according to a survey carried out by Cancer Research UK.

Six months after the ban on smoking in public places came into effect in Scotland, the charity polled over 500 bar staff, and found that almost 90% reported a healthier work environment, while 69% said it would benefit their health in the long term.

There were, however, differences in how young and older people viewed the impact of the ban, with 82% of those aged between 18 and 29 claiming their workplace was now healthier, compared to 67% of over-50s.

Professor Gerard Hastings, director of the charity's center for tobacco control research, said: "The survey results show that, in just six months, the people of Scotland are already reaping the health benefits of going smoke-free."
